About Asian Eyelid Surgery

Asian eyelid surgery is a diverse surgical procedure that can create an upper eyelid with a crease (double eyelid) of variable height, reduce puffy bulges of skin below the eyes, and/or create a rounder, brighter look for the eyes. This surgery is requested by women and men alike who desire larger appearing eyes, or a more awake impression. In some cases, Asian eyelid surgery can improve the field of vision. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson performs this procedure at the San Diego Cosmetic Clinic.  During your personal consultation, he will listen to your concerns, examine your situation, and formulate a treatment plan for the long-lasting outcome you want, while preserving your natural beauty.

Ideal Candidates

You may be an excellent candidate to receive Asian eyelid surgery if you experience any of the following issues:

  • Have small eyes that cause you insecurity
  • Possess small, nonexistent, or asymmetrical eyelids
  • Appear tired or irritable due to excess skin above the eyes
  • Have puffy skin on the lower eyelid that looks unappealing or hinders your vision
  • Are in overall good health

Surgical Technique

To accomplish Asian eyelid surgery, Dr. Laverson can address the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both, depending on your unique concerns and goals. Depending on your surgical aims, your outcomes can be subtle or dramatic and will last for years to come.

Upper Eyelid Surgery
There are a number of techniques that can be employed to perform Asian upper eyelid surgery (also called double eyelid surgery). The most common approaches are with incisions or without incisions. The method used for your procedure will depend on your goals, unique concerns, and treatment plan. The overall goal of double eyelid surgery is to create or reshape an upper eyelid crease that gives the eyes a rounder appearance. Upper eyelid enhancements are performed in-office with the patient under local anesthesia.

Lower Eyelid Surgery
For Asian lower eyelid surgery, an incision is typically made along the bottom of the lash line. This will allow Dr. Laverson to remove excess fat and tissue and create a smoother, more open appearance. For patients with dark circles underneath the eyes, injectables can be used to help fill in the soft tissue and reduce the appearance of sunken eye bags. The type of sedation you receive for lower eyelid surgery will depend on the changes you desire and the surgical methods employed.

What to Expect

Asian eyelid surgery for the upper and lower eyelids is performed as an outpatient procedure at our AAAASF-accredited facility. Your procedure will generally take around two hours, depending on what is a part of your customized surgical plan. Dr. Laverson will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure that you heal well following your procedure. You may want to use ice packs to help reduce swelling in the days following your surgery. Additionally, you should keep your head elevated while resting and sleep upright for the first few nights post-op. Recovery from Asian eyelid surgery can take up to two weeks, and your results will last for many, many years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does Asian eyelid surgery cost?
The costs for your personalized Asian eyelid surgery will depend on whether the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both are being addressed. Anesthesia fees will also play into your costs. After your customized treatment plan has been created, Dr. Laverson will be able to go over your cost estimates, as well as payments we accept. A member of our team can help you determine if you qualify for medical financing.

Will I have any visible scars?
Any scarring that occurs as a result of your surgery will not be visible due to the placement of the incisions. For upper eyelid surgery, the incisional technique will follow the natural crease of the eye while the non-incisional technique uses a fine thread or stitch to create a crease without making cuts. For lower eyelid surgery, the incisions will run along the lash line, which makes any scarring inconspicuous. During your procedure, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laverson makes every effort to make incisions as discreet as possible in areas that are easily hidden or covered.

Are there any side effects?
Following your surgery, you may experience some dryness of the eyes or minimal irritation. If these occur, we can recommend ointments and eye drops to make your healing more comfortable. It's important to protect your eyes against potential wind or sun irritation for the first several months following your procedure by wearing dark sunglasses.

Will my vision be improved?
A known benefit of eyelid surgery aside from the cosmetic advantages is that it can help improve the patient's field of vision by creating a rounder, larger eye shape. If your vision has been impaired due to excess tissue above or below the eyelids, you could benefit from this procedure in more ways than one.
