About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is among the most popular cosmetic surgeries offered today. Performed to change the appearance of your nose, this intricate procedure can improve the shape, size, proportion, and individual features of your centermost feature. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson provides this highly sought-after procedure to patients all across San Diego, CA and beyond at his practice, Feel Beautiful Aesthetic Wellness. During your one-on-one consultation, you’ll indicate to Dr. Laverson the aspects of your nose you'd like to change. The objective for this procedure is to create a more aesthetically appealing nose that meets your cosmetic desires and functions properly. Whether you're unhappy with the look of your nose or if breathing problems are hindering your life, contact our office to schedule your appointment.

Ideal Candidates

If you're unhappy with the look or function of your nose, this surgical procedure could be the solution you need. Women and men alike can be ideal candidates for rhinoplasty. Because the nose is not fully developed until late adolescence, Dr. Laverson recommends waiting until after the age of 16 to have nose surgery. There is no upper age limit, but the earlier it is done, the longer you benefit from your result. If you’re considering rhinoplasty to correct breathing irregularities, airflow through the nose can be increased at the same time. The structure and function of the nose often go hand in hand; if breathing is impaired through a nose that appears crooked, straightening the nose usually improves breathing.

Surgical Technique

Rhinoplasty is performed at our on-site AAAASF-accredited surgical facility while the patient is under general anesthesia. There are various surgical methods that could be employed, depending on your aesthetic goals and concerns. Dr. Laverson performs rhinoplasty using either an open or closed technique. The objective during treatment is to reduce excess cartilage, tissue, and bone, or to build and increase cartilage for a new shape. The nasal features are repositioned and the skin is re-draped over the newly improved framework. Stitches are implemented either on the inside portion of the nose or along the natural external fold.

What to Expect

Following your rhinoplasty, you will be carefully monitored in the recovery before being released to heal at home. Your nose will appear bruised and swollen for a few days. In almost all patients, there is bruising and discoloration beneath the eyes in addition to the nose. Ice packs and pain medication can help reduce these side effects. Your follow-up appointment with Dr. Laverson will be scheduled within a couple of days after surgery to assess your healing progress. It generally takes around 2 – 4 weeks to recover from nose surgery. Within this recovery phase, strenuous activity should be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does rhinoplasty cost?
The cost of rhinoplasty will vary, depending on which technique is used and how complex your procedure is. Before estimating your costs, Dr. Laverson will listen to your concerns and goals to develop your customized treatment plan. For your best results, it's important to focus on selecting an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Laverson, instead of the lowest cost.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?
Although rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons is not paid by insurance, functional rhinoplasty that is medically necessary to improve your breathing may be covered. If you're planning on applying for reimbursement from your insurance, please tell Dr. Laverson during your consultation. We can help you submit any needed information to your provider so your claim can be reviewed.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?
If you want to smooth the appearance of lumps and bumps along your nose, a hyaluronic acid-based wrinkle filler (like Restylane or Juvéderm) might be an option. A filler can temporarily improve minor imperfections, which might help you decide if you want to get a rhinoplasty for more lasting results. Nose surgery is better for more dramatic changes, long-lasting results, and to improve the internal structure of the nose for better function. During your consultation, Dr. Laverson can tell you more about nonsurgical nose reshaping.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty is about improving the appearance of the nose while still maintaining your cultural identity. This is often a concern if you are African-American, Asian, or Middle Eastern. In your consultation with Dr. Laverson, you can talk about what you want to keep and what you would like changed. This will allow him to personalize your treatment plan and provide you with your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Some patients consider combining rhinoplasty with another cosmetic procedure, like cheek or chin augmentation. Having multiple surgeries for a more dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Laverson. Once he understands your concerns and goals, he can help you choose which procedures will be a part of your customized treatment plan. Rhinoplasty can often help make your whole face look more balanced so you should wait to see your results before getting another procedure.
